Entertainment
The world of entertainment is colossal. Even the individual art forms that make up entertainment are huge in their own rights. And this is not surprising for the worlds of film, television and music have defined our culture and lifestyle for whole generations.
The film industry, as one of the most profitable businesses in the world, produces many hit blockbuster films every year and some of these achieve a monumental popular status very quickly. In 2008 this was The Dark Knight but in previous years movie milestones have included The Pirates of the Carribean: At World’s End (2007), The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003), Titanic (1997), Jurassic Park (1993), Terminator 2 (1991), The Godfather Trilogy and Star Wars (1977). The driving forces of these Hollywood films are the directors, who take the forms of Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas, Gore Verbinksi, Peter Jackson, Christopher Nolan and The Coen Brothers. The top earning movies can achieve more than a billion dollars world wide.
But films would be nothing without music. Music can create a huge emotional response in a movie and in itself it is an art form that makes millions of pounds each year. From the likes of Madonna, Britney Spears, The Sugababes, Girls Aloud, Take That and McFly to the likes of U2, The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Muse, Radiohead, Foo Fighters and Bon Jovi; music is diverse. There is a genre for everyone and a form for every medium.
And as well as film, television can be helped by it. Soundtracks can be added to both film and television to create all kinds of emotions and televisions can also be used to showcase the latest music videos accompanying the latest bands’ releases. But it is not just music that makes television special, it is also the wide array of actors and programmes such as Doctor Who, Eastenders, Coronation Street, Lost, Heroes, Qi, Have I Got News For You, Doctors, Neighbours and many more.
Without entertainment and the industries that create it our world would be a very different place. It means that people will always enjoy them and they will continue to flourish and develop for many years to come..
